Biamonti 265 – Unused sketches, mostly for piano, circa 1800. They are among the Beethoven manuscripts kept in the library of the Paris Conservatoire. (Max Unger page 110/89).
New Studies from the Beethovenian Music Research Centre www.lvbeethoven.org: The manuscript is in Paris in the National Library of France, Gallic Section, manuscript 84. It consists of only a sheet in long format with 16 lines preceded by a blue cardboard cover with the inscription, in beautiful calligraphy:
Beethoven
½ feuille
de musique
–
Manuscrit autographe
donné
a Georges – Kastner
par Mr Bamberg
Consul de Prusse
on par
Schindler
Only the first page of the sheet was used, and of that, only the first six staves, along with staves 10–11, which contain a pencil sketch difficult to decipher, were employed. The second page is entirely blank.
Lines 1-6
Lines 10-11
These sketches were studied by Max Unger in his article on the manuscripts in the National Library of France in Paris, Gallic section. Max Unger notes that it would be a sketch of an unknown study in A major for piano of which he cannot determine a plausible date, and therefore limits himself to indicating it as “of the central period in Beethoven’s life”; a sheet of paper in horizontal format written in ink and pencil; in fact there are at least 3 sketches: one in A major, as Unger writes, and another in F major at staves 5-6 which recalls a popular melody. Interesting in my opinion, however, is the last sketch, the third, hastily written in pencil on lines 10-11. It is written in a very disorderly way but clearly, in the first two measures, you can read an arpeggio that anticipates that of “Für Elise WoO 59.”
