Biamonti 487 – Beginning of a Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in D Minor
The musical exemples and the texts on this page are by Graziano Denini.
Biamonti 487 – Beginning of a Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in D minor, left unused, 1809. It is included in the group of sheets listed under number 477 and following. Landsberg 5 Notebook (see footnote), page 65. Piece described by Nottebohm, Zweite Beethoveniana, II, page 267. Published by the Beethovenhaus in Ein Skizzenbuch aus dem Jahre 1809, page 125.
New observations from the Beethoven Music Research Center: It is located on page 69 of the Landsberg 5 Skizzenbuch, staves 1–7. Nottebohm describes it as: “… und ein liegengebliebener Anfang zu einem Clavierconcert.” [“… and a leftover beginning of a piano concerto.”]
From what we see written at the top of the page, however, it does not appear that Beethoven intended it for a piano concerto. Beethoven then writes a series of arpeggios resembling a cadenza, beginning the staff with a prominent F-sharp, yet he indicates the fragment as being in D minor. Did he therefore wish the cadenza (or part of it) to be in the key of G major?
The second arpeggio, according to Nottebohm—and consequently Biamonti—begins on F; in our opinion, however, confirmed also by Brenneis’s transcription, it should begin on the same D as the first and third arpeggios, unless one wishes to consider the small dot (without a stem and written in mustard-colored ink, like the staves of the page) that appears before the D
. Landsberg 5, page 69, staves 1–2 Nottebohm, Zweite Beethoveniana, page 267
.
The sketch then resumes with a theme of march-like character, only two bars long, and continues for another six bars in F major, on staves 4 and 5, which are complete.
Biamonti 487 is part of the “Research Becomes Art” project.
