Biamonti 636 – Sonata in A major for piano, Opus 101: original ideas for the fourth movement, 1815

Page reference: page 77 (Nottebohm, II, page 343). They are found in the Scheide Skizzenbuch on pages 77 (lines 6–9) and 79 (lines 10–13). They were studied by Nottebohm in his volume Zweite Beethoveniana, on pages 343–344, who however places the second sketch on page 78, whereas it is actually found on the following page, that is, page 79. Biamonti, instead, indicates both on page 77.

Nottebohm writes: “Zum letzten Satz finden sich nur zwei abgebrochene Skizzen, zuerst diese (Seite 77, fig. 1) Bald darauf (fig. 2) Man sieht, nur das Hauptmotiv ist gefunden, das aber nicht, wie im Druck, als ein für sich bestehendes Glied, sondern als Bestandteil eines längeren Abschnittes erscheint. Beethoven hat die Arbeit zum letzten Satz in einem andern Skizzenbuche fortgesetzt.”
