Biamonti 700 – Sketch for a Fugue in F-sharp major.

Date: Between November 1817 and March 1819 Source: Nottebohm, Zweite Beethoveniana, Volume II, page 129. This sketch follows the Minuet catalogued as Biamonti 699. Beethoven wrote: “Fis dur. Fugirt” (F-sharp major. Fugato). and: “In diesem wo moglich B-Moll” (In this, where possible, B minor)

These annotations appear in the sketchbook for the Sonata Opus 106, which contains numerous unused ideas and fragments from this period. The indication “Fugirt” suggests Beethoven was planning a fugue or fugato section in F-sharp major, possibly as a continuation or contrast to the preceding minuet. The mention of B minor may refer to a modulatory passage, a secondary theme, or a contrapuntal answer within the fugue.
