Beethoven wrote: “Zwischensatz oder Abschnitt st… in Stück” (Intermezzo, or passage, in the last piece). This sketch appears in the sketchbook for the Sonata Opus 106, among numerous unused ideas and fragments from this period. The phrase suggests a transitional section or inserted passage intended for the final movement of a larger work—possibly the Sonata Op. 106 itself.
The term “Zwischensatz” implies a musical interlude, perhaps a modulatory bridge, developmental episode, or structural pivot within a larger sonata form.
