Biamonti 703 – Presto in B-flat minor.

Date: Between November 1817 and March 1819 Source: Nottebohm, Zweite Beethoveniana, Volume II, page 129. This sketch is a Presto in B-flat minor, and it appears to be closely related to the fragment catalogued as Biamonti 702. The earlier sketch (702) includes Beethoven’s annotation: “Auch Könnte am ende Rondò moderato u. als Episode Fuge in B moll” (Also could be placed at the end: Moderato rondo and, as an episode, fugue in B-flat minor)

This suggests that both fragments were intended for the second part of the Scherzo of the Sonata Opus 106, or at least considered as structural or thematic alternatives during Beethoven’s compositional process.
