Hess 90 – Piano reduction of the ballet Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus (The Creatures of Prometheus), Op. 43.

According to Carl Czerny, this reduction, which appeared in 1801 through Artaria as Op. 24, is by Beethoven himself. [The source of this claim seems to be found in the collection Anekdoten und Notizen über Beethoven, written by Carl Czerny between September and November 1852 and published by Otto Jahn.

The information is cited in Thayer II, p. 237, and in all subsequent editions of Thayer.] The work was published by Hess in SBG, vol. VIII, 1964, p. 44. The autograph is housed at the Beethoven-Haus, SBH 747; it is part of the Bodmer collection and was initially catalogued as BMd 1.

Hess 90 is part of the “Research Becomes Art” project.
