Hess 095 – Version in F Major for Piano of Clärchen’s Lied No. 4 from Egmont, Op. 84

This piece is a piano transcription in F major of Clärchen’s Lied No. 4 from Beethoven’s incidental music for Egmont, Op. 84 (1810). It appears as a supplement in the incomplete autograph manuscript held in Berlin.

• The transcription was never published by Willy Hess. He stated that it “adds nothing new”, which is why it was excluded from the Supplemente zur Gesamtausgabe (SBG).
• However, it was later published in the new complete edition Beethovens Sämtliche Werke, Volume XII, Part 1 (Lieder und Gesänge), by G. Henle Verlag, Munich, 1990, page 250.

• A facsimile of the second of four pages was published in an article by Helga Lühning, featured in Questiones in Musica: Festschrift für Franz Krautwurst, Hans Schneider, Tutzing, 1989, pages 351–386.
