Hess 190 / 207 Variants, Alternative and Excluded Versions of Folk Songs from Various Countries

Hess 194 – From the 20 Irish Folk Songs, No. 5.

Hess 194 – From the 20 Irish Folksongs, No. 5. Autograph: Paris Conservatoire, Beethoven Ms. 24 No. 6 (catalogued as No. 251 in the second edition of the Hess catalogue and as No. 167a in the third edition of the same catalogue). Unger’s statement that this piece is unknown is incorrect, as is the information in Kinsky/Halm (p. 668) that it is No. 11 of the 25 Irish Folksongs WoO 152. Copy: 29 IV. [The autograph is now in the BN. Cooper cites the song as an early version of the folksong “I Dream’d I Lady” (Text by Kobert Burns), which was later superseded by WoO 153 No. 5; composed July 1810. Cf. C/F, p. 213. Published by Hess in SBG, Vol XIV 1971 p. 112, where however it is erroneously dated to 1815.]
