Hess 195 – From the 20 Irish Folksongs, No. 11. Copy: 29 IV. [See C/F, p. 215 where it is given as an alternative (second setting) to the folksong “When Far from the Home” (on a text by Thomson); composed February 1813. WoO 153 No. 11. Mark Zimmer writes about it: “Beethoven composed two settings of this folksong more or less simultaneously. Beethoven then sent both to Thomson with a note to the effect: “I have composed No. 10 of the last ten arias twice. You may include in your collection whichever one you like.” I find this version as pleasant as the one in Thomson’s editions and in the Kinsky/Halm catalogue. It undoubtedly received no less esteem from Beethoven than the other.
