Hess 332 – Pastorella in D Major, 16 bars long, was published in the Beethoven Album on page 124. This commemorative book of 312 pages was prepared in 1846 for the inauguration of the Beethoven monument, which took place in Bonn in 1845.

The manuscript is located in Berlin at the Staatsbibliothek, on page 67, lines 1–2, of the sketchbook known as Grasnick 2. It was also reviewed by Biamonti, who catalogued it as number 307 and dated it around 1801. However, according to Johnsson, Tyson, and Winter in their book Beethoven Sketchbooks, the date of composition should instead fall between February/March 1799 and late summer of the same year.

Musical Structure: Although written on two staves, the lower one remains empty. The piece is in D major and is divided into two parts:

• First Part: 8 bars with a repeat sign. It is divided into two sections of four bars each, with the second being a repeat of the first in an open-close form.
• Second Part: also 8 bars. It begins with two measures repeated with a slight variation, followed by a varied repetition of the beginning of the piece, transposed one octave higher, and ends with a final cadence.

At the beginning of the second part, there is a hint of a repeat sign, but none is found at the end of the piece.

Title and Interpretation: The term Pastorella is derived from the title found at the beginning of the piece, although it appears to be written as “Pastoral”.
