The German musician Johann Paul Aegidius Schwarzendorf, nicknamed Martini the German (Freystadt, 31 August 1741 – Paris, 10 February 1816), upon moving to France, assumed the name Jean-Paul-Égide Martini. He is also known as Giovanni Paolo Egidio Martini. In 1764 he was initiated into Freemasonry in the Parisian lodge of the “Les Amis réunis.”
Among all his compositions, the best known is the song Plaisir d’amour of 1785 with words by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (“Plaisir d’amour ne dure qu’un moment, chagrin d’amour dure toute la vie…”). It is said that this was Queen Marie Antoinette’s favorite song and that people heard her sing it in her prison in the Tuileries Palace while she awaited the guillotine. This romance was translated into various languages.
