WoO 44-1 – Sonatina (Allegro, Sonatensatz) in C major for mandolin and piano, written for Countess Josefine Clary, 1796, first published by Arthur Chitz in Vienna in Der Merker, 1912 (Year III), issue 12 (June), pages 446–450. Bruers 293 – Hess 43 – KH. (WoO) 44/1 – Peters 74.
The original manuscript is held in the family archive of the Clam Gallas counts in Friedland (Czechoslovakia). It was discovered there by Arthur Chitz, who gave a brief report in the Zeitschrift der Internationalen Musikgesellschaft in Leipzig (May 1912, page 276), and subsequently published it in June of the same year as an appendix to his article on Beethoven’s compositions for mandolin, in the Viennese periodical Der Merker, and again in December of that year in the Revue Musicale S.I.M. A more recent edition was published by Willy Hess in the ninth issue of the Supplemente zur GA., 1965.
This is a miniature first movement of a sonata; the piano is given a very simple accompaniment part.
HISTORY
Origine and publication: composed from February to April 1796 in Prague. The first edition was published posthumously in June 1912 by Arthur Chitz as a musical complement to the Viennese magazine Der Merker. (see above) For mandolin pieces in general, see WoO 43a. First execution unknown.

II Verified transcript not proven.
Among the sources of mandolin pieces rediscovered by Arthur Chitz in the 1905-1912 Clam Gallas Archive review was a copy of WoO 44a, which served Chitz as the basis for the first edition of this sonatina as an appendix to three essays published in rapid succession (Sources III, see also Raab/NGA V/4 pp. 169f). Since 1912 there has been no trace of this transcription (Raab / NGA V / 4 p. 166).
