WoO 99 – “Scrivo in te” (Canti italiani a cappella No. 8) – Duet for Soprano and Tenor (1795–96)
Hess 215 – Song 8: Duet “Scrivo in te l’amato nome” (not “Se vivo in te” as Thayer indicates); for soprano and tenor; in D major; 20 bars; Thayer, song 17. [WoO 99, no. 11.] Text from Metastasio’s cantata Il nome. Composed circa 1795-6. [Published by Hess in SBG, vol. I, 1959, p. 10.]
Autograph: Artaria 166 pages 31/32. Italian text by Metastasio (from the cantata “Il Nome”): “I write in you the beloved name of her for whom I die, dear to the sun, happy laurel, as Love imprinted it in me, as Love imprinted it in me. As you preserve each of your leaves, preserve Chloris in my room; but let not my hope be as barren as you, as barren as you.”
The manuscript is located in the Berlin State Library, manuscript Artaria 166a, pages 31-32. It is written with very few corrections, see what W. Hess writes about them, made by Beethoven himself, probably before handing the work over to Salieri; for this reason we have transcribed the canto directly in its final version. W. Hess writes in the Appendix to Volume I of the Supplements to GA Hess. Hess: Hess 215, Thayer Stück 17 Komponiert nach Nottebohm um 1795. Thayer Lesart If I live in you ist falche, trotz Kinsky-Halm diesbezüglichem Fragezeichen.
