WoO 122 – Kriegslied der Österreicher: “Ein grosses deutsches Volk sind wir” for voice (with chorus refrain in unison) and piano, first half of April 1797, published in Vienna, Artaria, end of April 1797. The original manuscript is lost. In response to the threat of a French invasion in the spring of 1797, a general levy was called across the districts of Vienna for 7 April. On this occasion, Lieutenant Friedelberg—who had already written the Farewell Song to the Burghers of Vienna for the Corps of Free Volunteers in 1796 (see no. 108)—composed the verses for this War Song, which was immediately set to music by Beethoven and likely sung during the flag blessing ceremony that was held on the ramparts on 17 April.
Shortly thereafter, with tensions eased following the signing of the preliminary peace agreement in Ljubljana and the disbanding of the newly raised militias, the hymn—like its predecessor—soon fell into obscurity.

Composition and publication: Composed at the beginning of April 1797, immediately before the printing of the original edition of Artaria in Vienna, dated April 14, 1797. The motivation for Josef Friedelberg’s poem was the appeal made on April 4, 1797 to the entire population of Vienna to volunteer to defend Austria from the Napoleonic troops advancing from the south. The volunteers formed a total of five corps. One of these, the Landständische Korps, was formed on 14 April. The volunteer units were not used due to the preliminary peace of Leoben on 18 April 1797. It is not known whether Beethoven himself volunteered in 1797 (as in 1796, see WoO 121). Text: The text by Josef Friediberg (1781?—1800) has come down to us exclusively through Beethoven’s musical composition; see also for this WoO 121. First execution unknown. The song was supposedly sung on the occasion of the great consecration of the flag on April 17, 1797.
