WoO 124 La partenza, Song (Canzonetta) for voice and piano, 1797-1798, published in Vienna, Traeg, June 1803, together with the song Zärtliche Liebe. GA. no. 251 (series 23/38) – Boett. IV/7 – B. 236 -KH. (WoO)124 – L. IV, p. 347/e – N. p. 179 – P. 99 -T. 132.
The original manuscript is unknown. However, there is a revised copy in the archives of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna (which had already belonged to Brahms) together with that of the other song: Gretels Warnung. An autograph annotation by Beethoven mentions the transfer of the first 7 bars of the piano to the upper octave. The lyrics are those of the first two stanzas of Metastasio’s Canzonetta of the same name. The music adapts to the harmonious grace of the words.

Origin and publication: probably composed in 1795. The original edition was published in June 1803 by Traeg in Vienna. The sketches for WoO 124, already identified by Gustav Nottebohm, are found together with a short sketch for the “Adelaide” op.46 on the last page of the autograph score of the WoO 28 variations. According to Douglas Johnson, this manuscript was written in 1795 and not, as previously generally assumed, in 1797 (Johnson/Fischhof vol. 1 p. 41 of). The beautiful copy of Lied WoO 124 may have been made immediately after the completion of the composition. Of course, Beethoven’s copyist used a paper that closely resembled the one that Beethoven himself – as far as we know – used only in 1796/97 (Johnson/Fischhof vol. 1 p. 174). It is possible that Beethoven’s corrections in the copy are related to the printing of the original edition, although they were ultimately not considered. Text: Beethoven set to music the first two of the 14 stanzas of the “Canzonetta V” by Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782) composed in 1746 (in Tutte le opere di Pietro Metastasio, ed. by Bruno Brunelli, vol.2, [Milan] 1947, page 780). Helga Lühning conjectures that Beethoven knew only these two stanzas. We find a German translation for the first time in 1806 in Kühnel’s edition without indication of author. First execution unknown.
