Anhang 18

Nachruf oder “An Sie”
Lied fur Singstimme mit Klavierbegleitung – 1818

Anhang 18 – “Nachruf” or “An Sie”: Lied for Voice and Piano (1818)

This Lied for solo voice and piano was first published in 1851 by Breitkopf & Härtel under the title An Sie. Later editions were released by Scheslinger and Bachmann (Hanover), retitled An Auguste, and eventually as Nachruf (“Obituary”).

Although long associated with Beethoven, authorship remains speculative. Possible composers include Carl Dames or Marianne Czegka, with a likely date of origin around 1844. The anonymous lyrics exemplify the archetypal romantic poetry of the 19th century, echoing stylized sentiments of longing and idealized love. Despite its conventional text, the music displays occasional charm and subtle stylistic nuances.
