In this article I have sought to gather, for the first time, everything that has ever been written in newspapers, journals, dictionaries, and almanacs of the eighteenth century concerning the musician Ludwig van Beethoven, including both articles of great importance and simple mentions.

The task has been a most arduous one, and I have endeavoured to carry out a complete study up to the year 1800, although some writings have surely escaped me, being no longer traceable; for this I beg the indulgence of readers and of the devoted followers of the site.
