Opus 99 Der Mann von Wort: Du Sagtest, Freund for voice and piano
Gemäß dem veschedenen Ausdruck in den Versen piano und forte
Opus 99 – Der Mann von Wort: Du sagtest, Freund, for voice and piano, Opus 99, May–June 1816, published in Vienna by Steiner, November 1816. G.A. No. 225 (series 23/11) – Boett. X/5 – Bruesrs 99 – KH. 99 – L. III, p. 300 – Nottebohm 99 – Thayer 196.
The original manuscript forms part of the Bodmer collection in the Beethoven-Haus. The sketches are found at the end of the Miller sketchbook, referenced under No. 652, and are also briefly mentioned by Nottebohm. The text is by the poet and Vienna police director Friedrich A. Kleinschmid. Six stanzas, extolling the virtue of the German man of his word, all set to the same motif as the first, simple and short. At the beginning appears the instruction: “Gemäss dem verschiednen Ausdruck in der Versen piano und forte”.

Official title: Opus 99 Der Mann von Wort Lied (G-dur) nach einem Gedicht von Friedrich August Kleinschmid für Singstimme und Klavier Widmung: — NGA XII/1 Nr. 64 AGA 225 = Serie 23/11
Origin and publication: The sketches contained in the “Scheide” notebook were written in April/May 1816 in Vienna, immediately after the extensive notes for Op. 98. Beethoven sent the completed composition to Steiner in August/September. The original edition was published by Steiner & Comp. in Vienna in November. In the Musik-Anzeige (November 1816) the Lied is still listed as Opus 92 and without a price. It was apparently not published until the course of November 1816 (also noted in Nottebohm/Beethoveniana I and TDR III p. 588 no. 9). It was only on 21 December 1816 that Op. 99 (together with Opp. 92, 95–98 and 100) appeared in the Wiener Zeitung.
According to Anton Schindler (as with Op. 100), the opus number was added by the publisher on his own initiative (see his comments on Artaria’s letter to Beethoven of 24 July 1819, BGA 1317). Notes on the text: no printed edition of the poem by Friedrich August Kleinschmid (1749–1838) has been found. Nothing further is known about the relationship between the Vienna police station director and Beethoven. First performance unknown.
The sketches will be featured in an article specially created for the Beethovenian Music Research Center, www.lvbeethoven.org
Du sagtest, Freund, an diesen Ort
komm ich zurück, das war dein Wort.
Du kamest nicht; ist das ein Mann,
auf dessen Wort man trauen kann?
Fast größer bild’ ich mir nichts ein,
als seines Wortes Mann zu sein;
wer Worte, gleich den Weibern, bricht,
verdient des Mannes Namen nicht.
Ein Wort, ein Mann, war deutscher Klang,
der von dem Mund zum Herzen drang,
und das der Schlag von deutscher Hand,
gleich heil’gen Eiden, fest verband.
Und dieses Wort, das er dir gab,
brach nicht die Furcht am nahen Grab,
nicht Weibergunst, noch Menschenzwang,
nicht Gold, nicht Gut, noch Fürstenrang.
Wenn so dein deutscher Ahne sprach,
dann folg’, als Sohn, dem Vater nach,
der seinen Eid: Ein Wort, ein Mann,
als Mann von Wort verbürgen kann.
Nun sind wir auch der Deutschen wert,
des Volkes, das die Welt verehrt.
Hier meine Hand; wir schlagen ein,
und wollen deutsche Männer sein.
