Hess 113 – Marzelline’s Aria, with the shortened 1814 finale.
The Beethoven Autograph 26, held in the Berlin Library, contains a copy of this aria in its 1806 version, on which Beethoven wrote the 1814 revisions. These revisions represent an attempt at a radical shortening of the finale; a Vi-de runs from the bar following the più moto to a conclusion of only three bars, of which I published a piano transcription in Die Musik, XXX, no. 2 (1938), p. 517, and the full score on p. 254 of my work Fidelio.
[Published by Hess in SBG, vol. XIII, 1970, p. 169. A detailed study of all versions of Marzelline’s aria can be found in Philip Gossett’s article The Arias of Marzelline: Beethoven as a Composer of Opera, Beethoven-Jahrbuch, X, Beethoven-Haus, Bonn 1983, pp. 141–83.]
