Biamonti 154 – Piece in the Form of a Rondo in C Major, for Piano and Cello (Sketch), First Half of 1798
“Two sheets,” writes Nottebohm, “preserved at the British Museum, contain at the beginning some unknown sketches and then notes for the first and second movements of the Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Cello Op. 11.” The unknown sketches—faithfully transcribed from Nottebohm—occupy the greater portion of the material and refer to two pieces. The first, which is the subject of this entry, is in G major for piano and cello, broadly developed and in the style of a rondo. It may be added that it bears some resemblance to the Rondo of the second Duet for Clarinet and Bassoon. (Biamonti)
As Kerman rightly observes (Ludwig van Beethoven Autograph Miscellany from circa 1786 to 1799 – British Museum manuscript 29801 ff. 39–162, “The Kafka Sketchbook”), pages 16 and 17 of the transcription and folio 143 recto of the original manuscript, this is a sketch—not definitively a rondo—but more likely a three-voice fugato intended for the finale of the Trio in G major for Violin, Viola, and Cello, Opus 9 No. 1.
