Hess 28 Second Trio for the Scherzo of the String Trio in G major op. 9 no. 1

Hess 28 – Second Trio for the Scherzo of the String Trio in G major op. 9 n. 1, July 1798-1800 . Hess 28 – KH 9 – (Page 21).

Second Trio for the Scherzo of the String Trio in G major op. 9 no. 1, July 1798-1800, published by Arnold Schmitz, Beethoven, unbekannte Skizzen und Entwurfe, Bonn, Beethovenhaus, 1924, pages 12-17 and I-II, (book available in full on our website) recently by W. Hess in the sixth issue of the Supplemente zur G.A., 1963. [Cooper points out, in C/C on p. 238, that this trio in A-flat major for the Scherzo, which dates from around 1797-1798, may have been later discarded from the manuscript score. See also Douglas Johnson’s work Beethoven’s Early Sketches in the “Fischhof Miscellany” Berlin Autograph 28, 2 vols., Ann Arbor 1980, p. 327-8.] The autograph is at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn. The first edition was that of Arnold Schmitz in the third volume of the Veröffentlichung des Beethoven-Hauses, Beethoven-Haus, Bonn 1924. [Published by Hess in SBG, Volume VI, 1963, p. 48. This second trio is also studied by Emil Platen in the preface to the Beethovens Sämtliche Werke, vol. VI, pt. 6, Streichtrios un Streichduos, G. Henle Verlag, Munich 1965.] The original manuscript is preserved in the Beethovenhaus and brings at the end some passing lines for the return to the first part of the Scherzo. Schmitz, who also gives the entire facsimile in the aforementioned publication, believes it was written for some particular execution, in a period (July 1798 – 1800) subsequent to that of the completion of Opus 9; and it justifiably supposes that it should have been played after the repetition of the first two parts of the Scherzo, as a second Trio (in the character of a Minuet) instead of the repetition of the first (in the character of a Scherzo).
